Synthetic oil is being recommended in many newer cars today.

Back in the old days, when the car needed the oil changed, the mechanic would grab a few quarts of 10-w-40 off the shelf, install a new filter, and $20.00 later you were on your way.  Not so anymore.  With the advent of new synthetic blends, auto manufacturers are researching ways to utilize the lighter, less viscous formulas of oil to help boost their fuel economy and control emissions.  While this is an overall plus for the auto industry, these changes come at an increased price for maintenance.  In the auto industry. we’ve seen the average oil change increase,  ranging from 45-$75.00 depending on the oil needed.

Decoding the numbers…

One of the advantages of using a synthetic oil is the fact that it can be produced in a 0W-20 weight, which means that the viscosity of the oil while it is cold is at 0 – the W standing for winter.  The “20” is the viscosity at operating temperature.  These numbers represent a lower friction and thus a higher efficiency for the engine.  Manufacturers have been known to void the warranty on an automobile if the proper oil is not used.  It’s always a good idea to heed the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding maintenance.  Many of the newer vehicles are designed to take a lighter, less viscous oil, and as the auto industry has evolved, so has the oil we put in our cars.  Where every 3-4000 miles used to be a must, many newer cars are recommending 5,000 and even 7,500 mile changes.

Count your blessings

While many of us cringe at the thought of paying over $50.00 for an oil change,we thought it would be fun to look up the maintenance costs on a few of the more exotic vehicles – and here’s what we found.

  • Porsche 911 – Oil Service between $300.00 and $500.00, varies slightly from model to model.
  • Ferrari – from $400.00 to $1100.00 depending on the model
  • Lamborghini – from $400 to $2000.00 depending on the model
  • Aston Martin – from $200.00 to $800.00 depending on the model
  • Bugatti – Approximately $20,000

At 5 Points, we’re always striving to find ways to make maintaining your vehicle more affordable, and while those of you who own a Bugatti are probably not terribly worried about the cost of maintaining it, for the rest of us, check out our website for different maintenance specials we run.  At the end of the day, proper maintenance of your vehicle will save you more than the cost of the service.
